RSF Visits Fisher River Cree Nation

The Rising Stars Foundation would love to give a big shout out to Fisher River Cree Nation who gave us the opportunity to visit their community during their Treaty Days celebrations. Thanks to RSF Member at Large, Shane Cochrane, RSF Summer Camps was able to join to be a part of a great language and literacy program for community youth this summer. Shane is the lead teacher of this program operated by Frontier College.

Frontier College is proud of its long history of respectful partnerships with First Nations, Métis and Inuit (FNMI) communities across Canada. For over 40 years, Frontier College has worked with various FNMI partners to create appropriate literacy programs (and camps) that address the needs of individual communities. They work to reflect the culture and traditions of each community in our programs. These programs support FNMI student success in school by complementing the formal education system and responding to a need for quality learning supports in rural, remote, and isolated communities, especially during the summer months.

The camps help prevent summer learning loss, the decline in student performance between school years, and promotion of a love of reading and learning so that students return to school better prepared to learn and succeed. Campers are provided with safe and supportive learning environments where they take part in many types of fun and educational activities, including reading, storytelling, writing, arts and crafts, music, science experiments, field trips, and more: all of which include embedded elements of literacy and numeracy. Parents, Elders and community members are also encouraged to take part in the camps by sharing their skills and knowledge, thus making the camps a community-wide initiative.

Thanks to Shane, support staff, and all the kids who allowed us to have a great afternoon of fun and learn from such a great program! RSF would like to wish Shane all the best in his teaching career. In the fall Shane will be joining his older brother Jordie as a Middle Years teacher at the brand new school in Fisher River! The Rising Stars Foundation would like to thank both brothers, and the community for their commitment to education and wish everyone in the community all the best moving forward at their new school! We look forward to visiting again soon!!
